Ghostbusters Was Sigourney Weaver’s Only Green Screen Acting Experience

Science fiction icon and Ghostbusters star Sigourney Weaver recently revealed that in the course of her illustrious 50-year career in movies, she has performed in front of a green screen only once.

The actor — best known for her role as the resourceful alien-hunter Ellen Ripley in the Alien films — sat down to talk with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes on the SmartLess podcast. Discussing the upcoming Avatar sequel, which reunites Weaver with Aliens director James Cameron, the topic of green screens came up, prompting Weaver to dispel a common misconception about her work. She said, “Everyone in the world thinks we still do green screen. I haven’t done a green screen since a pickup in the first Ghostbusters. That long ago. So, I’ve never done green screen except that one time.”

Weaver’s role in the 1984 supernatural comedy classic involved her character — cellist Dana Barrett — being possessed by a demon named Zuul and opening an interdimensional portal, allowing entities such as the famous Stay-Puft Marshmallow man to wreak havoc on New York. The character returned in the movie’s sequel in 1989, and more recently made a brief appearance in the franchise’s 2021 update Ghostbusters: Afterlife. A follow-up to Afterlife is in the works, with the movie’s writer, Gil Kenan, taking over from director Jason Reitman. The film’s core cast, which includes Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd, will be reprising their roles, but Weaver’s involvement is currently unconfirmed.

Sigourney Weaver’s Next Sci-Fi Film

Meanwhile, Cameron’s sequel to his groundbreaking 2009 movie Avatar — The Way of Water — will see Weaver take on an entirely new character instead of reprising her original role as Dr. Grace Augustine, who was killed in the events of the first film. Weaver’s new Avatar role has been described as wildly different from the serious scientist in the first film. “I think if [director James] Cameron didn’t know me really well, he wouldn’t have cast me as something as goofy as this,” Weaver said. She will be playing Kiri, the Na’vi daughter of the original movie’s protagonists, Jake Sully and Neytiri. Weaver has spoken enthusiastically about the part, saying, “She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge.” The actor has undergone rigorous training for the upcoming blockbuster, with her new skills including parkour and freediving.
