Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency Asep Kuswanto on Sunday announced that city officials will soon crack down on pollution caused by industrial activities and conjure up solutions to the matter. He acknowledged that the poor air quality in the capital city not only comes from the city but also from satellite cities.
“Indeed we must acknowledge that the poor air quality of Jakarta is not only caused by Jakarta residents but also come from other regions,” said Asep on Sunday, June 4. “We are looking to establish collective coordination.”
He insists that city administration will coordinate with the private sector in other regions and build a memorandum of understanding with industries outside of the capital.X
One of the satellite cities officials have connected with is Bekasi – which houses masses of industrial complexes – with the aim of tackling and improving air quality.
Vehicle emissions roaming the streets in the capital city will also be monitored more strictly as regular emissions tests will be offered starting on Monday, June 5. “This service is not just for Jakartans but is also available across 8 locations that are in partnership with the [Jakarta official].”
Another plan that the city intends to impose is proposing fines for vehicles that do not pass emissions tests. The mass-vehicle emissions test touted under “Uji Emisi Akbar 2023” is held at Ragunan, Bogor City, Bogor Regency, Depok City, Tangerang City, South Tangerang City, Tangerang Regency, Bekasi City, and Bekasi Regency, state-news agency Antara reported.
